UNDERSTANDING WIFI AND ITS FUNCTION

Understanding Wifi and Its Function - Wifi is a wireless technology with 2.4GHz radio frequency for data transmission. It can be used in various wireless devices such as notebook computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones and smart phones, to access the Internet.
All recognized wireless LAN technologies with Wifi must be approved through the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and now, IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g are the two standards available.

What are the advantages of wireless wifi technology?
Within the range, users can quickly access internet via their own electronic devices that are embedded with Wifi technology. Compared to other wireless technologies, acknowledged WiFi products can improve compatibility between terminal users or access points that enable easy and stable wireless services.

What kind of electronic products support WiFi technology?
The Wifi service is now more popular with the growing scope and availability, many computer manufacturers and consumer electronics have incorporated WiFi functionality into their products. The notebook computers, smart phones, PDAs and handheld electronic gaming devices, are examples that have Wifi functionality. In addition, some digital cameras and photo frames also include this function.

How fast is Wifi wireless network?
According to IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g, the optimal wireless wifi transmission speed is 11Mbps and 54Mbps. Meanwhile, in the next generation of 802.11n standard, the optimum speed can reach 248Mbps.  For other standards, such as SuperG, Afterburner, Draft N 2.0, their maximum speed is 108Mbps, 125Mbps and 450Mbps. However, since they have not been approved by IEEE, Wifi wireless network will not offer this communication standard.

How far can Wi-Fi cover in outdoor areas?
Wifi signal can reach 100m in outdoor area. However, it depends on the distance between the user's geographical location and the Wireless Access Point. The resistance between the two points will weaken the signal and decrease the transmission speed.

Will Wi-Fi wireless networks interfere?
If there are some constraints between the Wireless Access Point and the user, the signal will be blocked which in turn affects the transmission speed. The effect may vary with different materials and surface area barriers. Furthermore, WiFi networks will also interfere when there are other wireless networks with the same frequency or electronic devices that use the 2.4GHz frequency bandwidth in coverage.

What is the WiFi app offering wireless networking?
Users can access the Internet via WiFi network to browse web pages, manage email, video conference, chat or instant massage.

What does the SSID (Service Set Identifier) mean?
SSID is a wireless network identity code that is also considered a wireless LAN name, allowing no more than 32 characters or symbols. When the user must connect to set-Wi Fi LAN, both the SSID must be same. Therefore, the main function of SSID is to differentiate different wireless LANs. In a WiFi wireless network, SSID is the name of the Wireless Access Point network during broadcast.

What are the two major WiFi communication modes?
The two main modes of WiFi communication are ad-hoc mode and infrastructure mode. Ad-hoc mode is a communication between different user terminals. While infrastructure mode is the communication between the user terminal and Wireless Access Point, and is commonly used in WiFi wireless Internet access.

What does Radio Frequency mean?
Radio frequency refers to electrical waves that can spread to a certain space, any sound, image and data can convert and transmit into the atmosphere via radio frequency. According to Article 2 of Radio Regulations, radio frequency is a type of wireless communication with a frequency lower than 3,000GHz.

What is the WiFi wireless network frequency?
IEEE approves standard - IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g both use 2.4GHz, while IEEE 802.11a uses 5GHz. In addition, the next generation of standard 802.11n wireless LAN also uses 2.4GHz.

Will WiFi automatically switch to other commercial wireless networks?
Some mobile devices will substitute the internet access service between GPRS / 3G and other Wifi services automatically, depending on signal strength. If more than one wireless or mobile service is available, the one with the strongest signal can be connected.

How to avoid mobile devices automatically switch from WiFi to other commercial wireless networks?
To avoid disputes over connection charges allegations, users should be aware of data services that use and characteristics of mobile devices. To avoid connecting to GPRS incurred cost / 3G or Wifi service accidentally, the user must turn off the internet access feature of GPRS, 3G and WiFi, and disable the automatic connection feature to this network.

Is it safe to use Smartphone as a hotspot?
It is safe to use only if you use the manufacturer supported Smartphone Operating System and configure a hotspot with a password that is well protected WPA2-PSK
